MR mammography (breast diagnostics)

With around 6,500 new cases per year, breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor disease in women, which is why regular screening using conventional mammography or sonography is very important. Magnetic resonance mammography serves as an extension of these types of examination. With the help of the new 18-channel-coil on our 3 Tesla MRI machine, the performed MR mammograms are optimized even further.

Common uses

  • Unclear mammography and sonography findings (overlay-free display of the mammary gland tissue and assessment of the blood flow)
  • Further examination of the mammary gland
  • Method for differentiating scars or recurrent tumors
  • Assessment of breast implants
  • Assess the extent of the breast tumor before a scheduled surgery
  • Assessment of the success of ongoing tumor therapies (chemotherapy, radiation therapy)

FAQ

When should the examination be carried out?

The examination should be carried out in hormonally active women between the 7th and 12th day of the cycle.

How is the examination performed?

Examination time: about 20 minutes. Lying on the examination table, you will be slid into a short magnetic tunnel; while recording, you will hear a drumming noise caused by the electromagnetic circuitry. Before the examination, you will be given an intravenous MR contrast agent. Please note our contrast agent information sheets.

Does the exam cause pain?

No, as chest compression is not required.

What must be considered during the examination?

Hearing aids, watches, jewelry, hair clips, glasses, etc. may not be taken into the examination room as they can become defective and/or cause image disturbances. Mascara must not/should not be worn during the examination. Patients with pacemakers, metal implants or an artificial heart valve must inform the doctor of this, before the examination. Important additional information: Credit cards are erased by the magnetic field.
